Envirobank.com.au is a program developed to have a significant effect on public place recycling targets throughout Australia. Envirobank will be a leader in the new movement towards a more sustainable way of life and a better future for Australian by revolutionising the perception of recycling through incentives and education. The Envirobank reverse vending machineIt will introduce a new advertising platform for business, Enviromedia, intended for companies that are serious about sustainability and wish to inform consumers not only about their commitment to the environment but also to promote new products at the highest point of influenece — when a customter is in store spending. Envirobank utilises Reverse Vending Machines (RVMs) to identify, sort, collect and process used beverage containers for recycling. RVMs are vending machines that allow consumers to deposit used beverage containers in exchange for incentives or in some states cash. Once a customer deposits a used container, the machine will sort, crush, compress or shred it, while reading the container's barcode to determine which type of material it is. Inside an Envirobank RVMCapacity may vary, but stand-alone machines can hold up to 2,000 cans and/or PET bottles before needing to be emptied. Less collections of more product means a reduction in the environmental footprint and a reduction CO2 emission caused by transport. The basic premise is that consumers get the ‘feel good factor’ by doing something for the environment in an easy and efficient way. Machines can come fitted with a modem that monitors the success of the machine and can publish recycling statistics, thus informing the retailer of additional store traffic and the impact of their environmental footprint. Machines are also fitted to dispense discount vouchers which customers can collect and cash in at nominated retailers to further reward shoppers for doing the right thing. Another feature of the Envirobank RVM is the ‘Charity Button’ that enables consumers to make a contribution to directly a charity if they do not wish to receive a shopping docket. Envirobank will be looking for Australian charities that have low administration costs. The initiative will actively support two nominated charities as selected by participating customers.
